And Then Some….
Please don’t interrupt children’s church…wait
until they are finished.
Matthew 5:38-41
We see Jesus the first thing He is doing here in
on the Sermon on the Mount.
He is debunking all of the teachings that have
been taught for hundreds of years.
It’s not about the letter of the law.
In things we do or don’t do.
--- the Pharisees, you don’t have to like them, but they were
letter of the law kind of people.
--- if they were
supposed to pray…. They would pray
--- if they were
supposed to give …. They would give.
It didn’t matter
what they were supposed to do… they did it.
Jesus tells us all that that
is not enough.
He wants and expects us to be “ an and then
some” Christian.
If you do what is expected of you…. That’s no
better than the tax collectors did.
If you were friendly to those who were
friendly to you… Who cares
But Jesus is teaching about the
conduct of an heir of the Kingdom.
--- the what’s expect of me
is more than what is written down.
It’s the intent of
my heart.
It’s going above my
requirements.
Isn’t that the kind of person
you want to hire.
Again we are talking about the conduct of an
heir of the Kingdom.
This is what Jesus is laying out for us.
---- you might have thought
it was this way… but you were wrong.
You can see Christians who never inherit
anything of the Kingdom because they never allow
their conduct to show they have grown in Kingdom
ways.
Galatians talks about the heir needing
to grow up.
In the Kingdom idea…. Time isn’t the
factor for growth.
It’s changing and having ourselves
molded into His likeness.
The conduct of a person who inherits the
Kingdom---
And then some person.
I do what is
required and expected of me… and then some.
Let’s take an OT example.
Genesis 24
The gold… the reward was in the extra.
What we put our extra in shows our priorities.
Jesus has set us an example.
He could have been born of a virgin, lived a
sinless life and died an atoning death for us by
being killed at child birth.
He went above and beyond what was
required of Him.
We can do no better for Him.
