Trash Talkin’

2.3.8

1 Samuel 17:17-24

See the story of David and Goliath.

We are going to do some reading that leads up to the story.

It was here at the battle with Goliath that David was propelled into his destiny.

---- it was at this point where everything changed.

Like David we all have destiny born in us.

            God birthed you for something.

            You were born a winner.

Read 1 Samuel 17:17-24

David got to the place where he was supposed to be at the “appointed time.”

---- how did he arrive there?

He was doing what he was instructed to do by his authority.

  • suppose he had been a rebellious man…. He would still be tending sheep and missed his opportunity.
  • We all need to identify our authority figures in our life.
      • There are governing and spiritual authorities.
    • If you don’t believe in spiritual authorities - you probably aren’t worried about destiny either.
    • David’s authorities were just getting him to do what needed to be done.

We need to identify our authorities in our life. Keep ourselves inline with them.

They aren’t their to run our lives, but to help us arrive at the right place and the appointed time.

--- I don’t know why, but that is just the way God seems to operate.

You like David have destiny wrapped up in you.

It takes that “appointed place and time” to get it to grow.

If you don’t believe this…. Go and make it a routine in your life to not follow what the police officers tell you to do…. You are going to have a hard time reaching the fullness of what God has for you…..

Now we find David at the battle. Then it starts --- TRASH TALKIN’

      1 Samuel 17:45-47

45 David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands."

The phrase I use here all the time is called “prophesy”

Defined --- a discourse emanating from divine inspiration and declaring the purposes of God.

This is exactly what David began doing. Letting his enemy know what’s going to happen to them. He declared the defeat of Goliath.

                  ***** he was trash talkin’

We have enemies that stand in the way of our lives.

They will try and defeat the purposes of God in our lives.

They try and hinder our destiny

Some try to – keep peace out of our homes

  • stifle our growth
  • bring discouragement
  • cause to become apathetic
  • Get us to become rebellious.
    • Rebellion – not the way the world thinks, but the way God thinks of it.
    • But to not acknowledge who God has placed in our lives.

Declare their defeat and your victory.

We are going to back up for a minute:

How was David able to defeat this giant?

      1 Samuel 17:36-37

36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine."

David was confident in his victory because he had already been victorious in his private life.

  • when you defeat the things in your private life, the other things don’t seem so tough.
  • David didn’t see Goliath the same way other people did. God had allowed “hidden” opportunities for him to prepare for this encounter.

When you defeat the things in your private life that no one else sees, you will be able to defeat the things that people can see.

Victory in his private life

David following his authority figure

Put him in that the APPOINTED PLACE AT THE APPOINTED TIME.

For him to step into his destiny.

The lion and bear, these were things that no one else saw, but he defeated them.

We should be trash talkin’ our enemies.

The key is we have to always be speaking the same language all the time.

You can’t speak defeat and weariness over your life and then expect to come face to face with Goliath and win.

--- I did exactly what you said and got beat…..

                        Not exactly.

The enemies we face are going to be mostly in our personal life.

Where we run the risk of speaking 2 different languages in

            In public, private

Where people can hear, what we think.

If your life isn’t lining up with your words, there are some private issues.

If you are saying to depression and discouragement that it’s defeated,

But in your heart you’re saying “I don’t think I am ever going to get over this.”

--- you can’t sow 2 different things your garden that are opposed

                                                            to each other.

--- Bible tells us if unclean thing touches something clean…

                        Clean becomes unclean.

If you speak words of victory followed by defeat….

                        Defeat will take over.

We are called to victory and to fulfill our destiny.

It’s defeating the enemies in our private life that help us to defeat the Goliaths of our lives, which in turn propel us in to our destiny.

  1. Check your authorities.
    1. God uses them to put us at the appointed place at the appointed time. They will give us opportunities to encounter and defeat our enemies.

How do we get there….#2

  1. Make a commitment to speak the same language.

Don’t speak words of victory followed by thoughts of defeat.

  1. Now begin trash talking.
    1. You’re on the playing field right now. There is something you are supposed to be doing and winning.

You better get to talkin’!

Keeping to the pattern we were using on the fast,

Would you do some trash talking today for yourself,

And continue to do it for our church too.

--- declare the enemies of increase to be destroyed here.
